There are multiple ways of setting taxes and working with taxes in Shopify.
Shopify has an entire area of their website dedicated to taxes, explore the Shopify Manual for Taxes.
Shopify has an app that will do all of the hard work of collecting taxes and help filing easier using Shopify Tax.
Please note, taxes are complicated and vary from country-to-country, state-to-state (or province to province), and even municipality to municipality, as such we can provide some information, but this should not be taken as guidance in your specific tax situation.
For the purposes of this help article, we are going to discuss the two major ways of setting tax rates in Shopify which Manage Comics supports.
Using Categories for Tax Calculation
Manage Comics automatically assigns any products imported from the Manage Comics catalogue a product category based on Shopify's standard product categorization taxonomy.
These categories are automatically set for you on your products when a product is imported from Manage Comics.
With this method you will refer to Shopify's tax calculations by using product categories to see how to finish setting taxes for products.
Manual Tax Override
You can also create manual categories and override taxation with those manual categories, and Manage Comics can help you set manual categories to products on import - Shopify has an article about tax overrides and exemptions.
Step 1: Create a manual collection
- From Shopify > Products, select "Collections".
- Give your collection a name (which you can remember, and that is specific to this situation)
- A description (optional, but this helps for later)
- Choose the collection type of manual.
Within Manage Comics
- Nagivate to Settings > Product Types
- Choose the item you want to set a manual collection for.
- Click the Add (1) button.
- Choose the collection you created above.
- Click Save at the bottom of the page
Any new products created with that product type will now be automatically manually added to that collection.
